Sorry, I am not fully understanding maybe the responsibilty/separation between the components tasks:

XMAX, the editor component does not handle e.g. the preview of reused content?
That's the XMAX host? that first has to lookup the reuse content, and than has to tell XMAX “show” reuse ABC at location  xyz?

Thank you very much.

This works very well. It must just provide the user feedback that they have entered the right othertype note.

Perfect!

I think I found it.

My custom print_……xml was missing a section
        ….

        ….

I was assuming it was added in some way to the master, but these stay separate and so need globals.

I can understand that you can't support this DITA 1.2 Configuration Kit very much, but I have a few doubts:

– Can I install this if I have XMetal 6.0 Enterprise SP1 (Version#: 6.0.2.070)?
– Maybe because of this, at step 4. of the installation instructions I get:
“Error 1606. Could not access network location “C:Program Files (x86)XMetal 6.0Author.”

It is not just SVN.

Resources
– Theoretically you could reuse from all resources that can share DITA content. It could be another (web) CMS like Drupal/Joomla/Wordpress if they can share their content in a DITA output.
– It can be a terminology database
– Or another database from any department

So not just SVN. If we move from SVN to a DITA CMS I would have the same question. We can't put everything in the CMS because we either don't own the content, or the CMS isn't the best place to store it.

Connector
In that respect, I don't care about the Connector to connect to repository. It could be much easier buy just browse the online resource and click some Share button and copy and paste the link into your DITA topic.

Refresh
But if the refresh F11 could work also for those references this would be great. This makes the things much more intuitive.

DITA-OT
Yes. here the half of the work should start. Either by the standard project, or for us as customization.

Hi Derek,

Yes, HTTP would be the first important one. I would assume that the resource to be reused must be accessible to everyone. Otherwise you have to build in authentication as well. But that's not the case for us.

You could think of a Subversion repository available via http://
Or a product configurator or a product name list.

The issue is that interesting if you are reusing for one specific subject. But especially if you want to reuse cross domain/subject/product, you don't want to be dependent on relative paths.

Secondly by having this, you could reuse easier information from external parties.

Hi,

Yes. Especially with conref, but I think you could apply this for many link/reference types.

As an example

Absolute file URL works

Relative path works

My question is, could this work:

Maybe this can work already, but I couldnt get it to work.

It is a pity that the document is slightly outdated in our situation:
– Windows 7 and/or Windows 2008 R2 Server
Language packs are installed in a different way
– It is different to install the applocale utility and officially it looks like it is not supported under Win7

Sorry to be stubborn, but I have a batch running on Windows 2008 R2 Server (which also works fine under Win7).
1. I convert all proprietary XML topics to UTF-8
2. Next the HHP, HHK, and HHC are converted to the GB2312 (or Shift_JIS for Japanese).
And all functionality works fine.

Now back to DITA XML.
If I postprocess the the DITA OT generated files and get the HHP, HHK, and HHC everything also works fine. Except the full text search. I can enter English words fine, but Chinese/Japanese words are not found. (But I should ask our Japanes/Chin. translators to test this)

Just for your info.

As far as I know the AppLocale utility is in use by the DITA OT.

There is no possible hack to the current *.js files (or is it inside a .xac file) in the XMetal/DITA folder to bypass this?
I off course don't know exactly which one do exactly handle the refresh references action.

Ok. But DITA-OT is only the first half of the problem (and solution) in that case.

If you press F11 in XMetal, it will overwrite your text with the default (=target) text as well.

We have exactly the same problem.

In HTML it works fine. You can overrride the default text with your own, but in the PDF it doesn't work.

It is somewhere in or before the MERGED process.

I have attached a very short ditamap and concept file.
The xref Help is clear:
must fill the default (target) description.
my text if you want to override it.
– Typically you want to use this to have inline references to glossary terms

The problem is worse:
– If you my text and press F11, this text is refreshed and loads it's targets text
– If you build PDF is is lost as well.
– BTW one of our writers noticed that there is an exception for type=”li”. Those xrefs are not refreshed

Thanks for the workaround.

I understand the considerations and to protect ourselves to do illegal reuse between domains.
However for those generic items like ph; i don't see the benefit.

Thanks.

On my own computer (winxp) I didn't have any problems yet.
But my colleague did try 2 times to install XMetal 5.5 and our own custom toolset and get it working.
(Without knowing your patch).
This week she tried for the third time because I said I maybe had a solution, but surprise surprise it did work already. Maybe xmetal55.exe got registered succesfully by itself already.

But thanks anyway, I hope that I understand the problem a little bit better.
