You might also want to check and make sure that you don’t have any large zip files on your desktop such as the DITA-OT. I found that they can cause XMetaL to be very unresponsive.gcrews June 19, 2013 at 9:31 pm

By “cannot generate”, do you mean the output progress dialog shows but the green progress bar does not and XMetaL becomes unresponsive? If so try restarting. That’s the issue that has plagued us for years…gcrews June 3, 2013 at 11:22 pm

Is there a way to tell XMetaL 7 to put the type attribute on topicref when editing maps the way Xmetal 6 did? It seems XMetaL 7 doesn’t even care about setting the type attribute anymore.
I just spent most of th day cleaning up build warning because of 200+ incorrectly inherited type attributes. I could definitely tell that nearly all the locations were recently added or changed content.

Looks like the “<” and “>” characters cause more xml issues. If you have < anywhere in a topic title, anything after it and before a > doesn’t show in the map editor or xml map view.

I think by default XmetaL creates a DITAVAL file from the output option dialog with any non selected items set as excluded. If it didn't include it at all then it would be included by default.
You can verify this by looking at the temporary ditaval file XmetaL creates during output in the temp, output, or source folder or wherever it creates it…gcrews May 14, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Have you had a chance to look at this?
I think I’m going to have to end up writing a tool that goes though all our maps in out CMS and corrects the type, format, and scope attributes on all our maps. There are are over 600 build warning about it right now. We also ran into an issue where a topicref was inheriting the wrong format attribute and therefor none of children links were being rendered and yet there is absolutely no toolkit warning or error about it.
I was only able to figure it out after digging into the temp build xml files. Xmetal Topic Reference Properties dialog incorrectly shows that the format attribute is set on topicrefs. The actual topicref code in notepad was:
Yet when we were looking at the “Topic Reference Properties” dialog general and preview tab, it shows format=”dita” as being set when it is not. Xmetal correctly set it after I deleted a character and added it back and then pressed ok.gcrews May 10, 2013 at 10:57 pm

Sorry forgot to mention,

DITA 1.1 Mode
Hum now that I think about it more, maybe it’s the format or scope attribute that I’m thinking of that XMetaL goes and corrects and updates when I open a map.
Hum I did a little analysis and it it looks like 90% of our topicrefs have the type attribute set and10% don’t. It looks like all the maps that cause build warning about the type attribute not being correct are all recently work on maps.
This seems to correspond with when we updated to Xmetal 7. Do topicref tags no longer get the type attribute set in 7? Is there any way to set it to always give a type attribute since if there isn’t one it inherits from an ancestor and may likely be incorrect?
The DITA-OT warning:
“ [DOTX019W][WARN]: The type attribute on a topicref element does not match the target topic. The type attribute was set to 'concept', but the topicref points to a more specific 'task' topic. This may cause your links to sort incorrectly in the output. Note that the type attribute is inherited in maps, so the value 'concept' may come from an ancestor topicref. Check and make the type of topicref match with the actual type of topic.”gcrews May 8, 2013 at 5:10 pm

Interesting, I will try that next time it starts happing on my computer with Xmetal 7. I don’t think would cause the issue though; I suspect it just happened to resolve itself at that moment. I suspect XMetaL 8 will have the same issue to, but it just hasn't happened yet. It only seems to happen on my computer about once every 2-3 months now and sporadically resolves itself. 4 coworkers have had the issues just this week though.
• Monday – output was causing not responding for one user
• Tuesday – One person got blue screen, another user was getting not responding.
• Wednesday – another user was getting not responding.
It’s not nice when a program makes you reboot being its acting up. I suspect some code in that CSS DLL is relying on some memory being zeros by default when it’s not. It’s the only thing I can think of that would cause the sporadic issue. This has been going on your years for us it’s really annoying.
Yups. I have already initiated migration to Xmetal 8. The trial version behaves okay.
With regard to the Xmetal 6, the freezing issue may seem to be overcome by clearing the User

carmstrong is discussing generating output from DITA files. It does not use CSSToXSL.dll at all, it uses the DITA Open Toolkit.
Bull, generating output from DITA files clearly uses that culprit CSSToXSL.dll.
gcrews is talking about generating either HTML or PDF using functions defined in the multipleOutput.mcr
No I'm not, I'm talking about when you “Generate output for DITA Map/Topic”.gcrews March 18, 2013 at 5:59 pm

Looks like I spoke to soon, the problem has not fully disappeared for us. Last week on Monday it was happening for one of our writers. Today (Monday) it was doing it for me now after being ok for about 3 months. I haven’t generated many outputs in the interim though.
This is very frustrating; it’s become a running gag with me and our writers. Writers call me over and show me outputs not working, I say yup got to reboot. It’s been doing this for years not with Xmetal 6, and 7.
All I have been able to tell is is is something in CSSToXSL.dll. Another morning wasted trying to resolve this stupid issue…gcrews March 11, 2013 at 5:58 am

Sounds like the output hang /crash issues we continuously run into.
Does Xmetal also go to 100% CPU usage (or 100% divided by # cores)? Does the output dialog appear but no “green” progress indicator shows? If so, sounds like it is the same exact issue we used to have about once a week where you would have to reboot the computer once or twice. Sometimes rebooting once didn’t solve the issue, sometimes it did. Sometimes killing a few processes would fix it, sometimes it would not.
I have not seen the issue in over 2 months now for us so I’m not sure what fixed the issue for us.
Out of curiosity, is your PC a Lenovo?
