XMetal 7.0 Author Enterprise Not Respond after opening 200 filesMay 17, 2012 at 2:03 pmParticipants 2Replies 3Last Activity 10 years, 8 months ago
I had a task of doing a word count and spell check on a whole folders worth of files since there was no ditamap and my CMS could not do it. I discovered XMetal Author Enterprise 7.0 (220.127.116.11) fails to respond after opening 100 plus topics.
I have a Dell 5520 i5 Windows 7 64 bit 4 GB of memory. I only had IE8, Excel, Xmetal and Messenger running. My base load of used RAM was 56%. XMetal crashed when is went over about 120 files and used RAM peaked at 75%. % CPU utilization never exceeded 60%. When I was opening the files, I was being prompted for Configure Key SPace Association. I would click close for each file (yes I was doing that 100+ times!). Evantually that dialog box would fail to appear and Title bar reported (Not Responding).

Do you mean that the search failed or that the Results pane listed 200 files and you then opened every file for editing?
If so, can you not open the files in smaller groups? Perhaps 10 or 20 at a time? I'm not sure why you would open 100 or 200 files at the same time. Perhaps there is a specific reason for that that I am missing. If you were to try to do that with other software (eg: 200 web pages in IE or FireFox or 200 Word files in MS Word, 200 Excel files in MS Excel) would you expect your system to handle that?
If the initial “Spell Check in Files” operation itself is failing it would be best to send a copy of the files you are working with to XMetaL Support so that they can load them up and try to reproduce the issue. When they can reproduce an issue there is a better chance that they can describe it to the development team so they can fix it. This feature has gone through a lot of testing but there might be some scenarios with some types of file content that it does not handle well.Bradley Shoebottom May 22, 2012 at 6:03 pm

I started to only open in groups of 100 as opposed to the full number in my folder. That is OK, no need to go to a lower #. It seems at over 120 XMetal just stops repsonding and the top title bar reports Not Responding trying to open the nth file.Derek Read May 22, 2012 at 8:33 pm

This is Windows telling you that the application is running slowly. Windows takes over (any application) when it feels it is “not responding” but that isn't necessarily always the case (it just means Windows hasn't seen any messages from the application for a bit). If you must work with this many files you will simply need to wait for them all to open and render (rendering them takes the larger portion of CPU cycles). If the speed at which the application is responding is too slow then you will need to work with fewer files at one time.
Depending on their size, I would recommend that you avoid opening more than a few dozen files, or far fewer if you have a slower machine or the files are larger. Each file you open uses resources (memory and CPU) and the more you open the slower the application as a whole will respond.
