XMetaL 5.5: Crash when scrollingOctober 14, 2010 at 9:25 amParticipants 5Replies 6Last Activity 11 years, 8 months ago
since a few days xmetal freezes completely when I try to scroll in a document with 100% cpu utilization. There are no error messages at all, even the debugging-mode with visual studio 2005 doesn't give me any hints.
Is there any way to log this error down? Reinstalling or system restore doesn't change anything either. On another, almost identical system everything works fine when using identical files…
I even tried the XP-Mode, same problem there…
Win7-x64 (UAC is disabled)
XMetal 5.5 (admin rights, compatibilty-mode set to XP-SP3)
I got the same issue on another xp-machine several month ago and wasn't able to fix it.

There is no logging mode in our product that would help you track down the issue.
The 5.5 releases (XMetaL Author Essential and Enterprise) are supported on XP and Vista. The 6.0 releases were designed to work on Windows 7, so you might try that, although they are officially not supported on 64-bit machines. We plan to support 64-bit in the next release.
I'm surprised that you see the issue running the product in XP-mode as Microsoft advertises XP-mode as being identical to running on a real XP 32-bit machine.
I would suggest you submit a support case to XMetaL Support and send the files you are working with along with specific steps. There are different ways to scroll: “open file x and use mouse wheel to scroll”, “use scroll bar to scroll”, “press PgDn key”, etc… However, if you can reproduce the issue with one of the installed samples available via the Help > Samples menu item (Journalist, Meeting Minutes, DocBook, DITA) that would be best.
We can then use this information as input for the version we are working on that will support Windows 7 64-bit.spyro October 15, 2010 at 8:18 am

Hello and thanks for your quick answer,
just about 2 h after posting this I was finally able to solve this. The problem was a corrupt sub-font (Arial italic) which was indirectly called by the linked css (font-family:sans-serif;) and caused the freeze while XMetaL tried to render this.
Thank you anyway,

Thanks for the follow up. I'll log this just in case there is some way dev can handle this. I suspect that this type of functionality would be within the Windows APIs we call but it might be possible to adjust our code to handle this type of failure.jonbrams November 4, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Spyro, I am experiencing the same or similar symptoms. How did you diagnose and fix the corrupt sub-font?spyro November 5, 2010 at 2:45 pm

i simply opened the font-folder and switched to thumbnail view.

Thanks. My thumbnail view of the Arial sub-fonts looks the same as a screenshot of how it should look that I saw on another forum. It sounds like I may need to try a different troubleshooting path.
