Using XMetaL developer 8 to create embedded forms for XMetaL Author 4.6
February 13, 2014 at 6:00 pmParticipants 0Replies 1Last Activity 8 years, 11 months agoHello,
Our team currently uses XMetaL Author 4.6 to edit documents. We recently discovered a need for embedded forms in our documents, but do not currently own an XMetaL 4.6 developer application. Is it possible to develop forms for XMetaL Author 4.6 using the new XMetaL developer? Thank you for all your help.

February 14, 2014 at 1:18 amWe test that forms created with older versions of XMetaL Developer work with newer versions of XMetaL Author but not the other way round (that would restrict the types of improvements that could be made).
If you are stuck using XMetaL Author 4.6 it would be best for you to perform this test yourself to make sure your particular XFT forms work with this old version. I don't believe any changes were made to the XFT format that would make newly created forms incompatible with older versions but it is possible.
Keep in mind that XMetaL Author 4.6 was designed to run on the latest and greatest version of Windows circa 2005 (XP SP2). It was also tested on Windows 2000 (those were the only two supported versions of Windows for this release). If you are still running XP then you should be OK. If you have moved to Windows 7 you are likely to have issues. XMetaL Author 6 (released 2010) was the first version to support Windows 7 and substantial portions of the software were rewritten to properly support new Windows 7 features (primarily the security related feature introduced with Vista called “UAC”).
