We are currently using track changes and I know that you can turn track changes on/off and accept/reject changes. However, I am wondering if there is a way to toggle track changes so that the track changes are visible/invisible. So the track changes processing instructions () would still exist in the plain text but not show in the tags on view when the user clicked a button or ran a macro. Is there a default toggle option in XMetaL 6.0 for this or is this a macro that needs to be created.
I have used the application_on_open macro to set track changes on by default for users as this is what was requested. However, I have two sets of groups that use this application. One group should have the application_on_open on by default and the other group should not have the application on by default. I am thinking about creating a macro that would be able to read which user group the user is part of through Active Directory using an LDAP query. Does this make sense and is it feasible to do something like this this way?

If you upgrade to XMetaL Author Enterprise or XMetaL Author Essential version 9 (current release) you will have the feature from your initial description.
In 9, an option to toggle this is listed on the View menu as “Show Change Tracking” or “Hide Change Tracking”. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+R toggles it as well.
For your Edit: what you have done is likely the best way to do it. I don't know how to query Active Directory using script, but you would need to load a control to do it (almost for sure). Maybe something like the following, except that I don't know if there is anything that let's you get Active Directory info. http://forums.xmetal.com/index.php/topic,27marg June 2, 2016 at 6:47 pm

This is a great tip for us keyboard shortcut users, thanks.
I have a related question: Is there a keyboard shortcut to toggle Track Changes itself? Not the red markup, but the capability itself. I really need this and have not been able to find it. XMetal would not let me record a macro that consisted of simply turning on Track Changes.
Using XMetal Author Enterprise 9.0.0.053.

Extract the .mcr file from the attached zip and copy it into Author/Startup in the XMetaL installation folder. The shortcut is Alt+Shift+T, but you can alter the key attribute to something else if you prefer.marg June 3, 2016 at 7:18 pm
