    Hello,

I am new to Xmetal (currently using XMetal Author 7.0) and DITA and I am running into the problem that when I create a DITA map, as per “DITA maps” instructions in the help documentation, I do not see the Map Editor appear. All that is visible in the place where it should appear is the Resource Manager with the computer's Desktop folders.
I already set Tools>DITA Options>Map Editor> Open DITA maps in the: Map Editor

Thank you for any help and/or tips you can offer.
    Miguel

    Issue resolved, I think.

When opening files I was always choosing Open vs. Edit in XMetal.
Once I chose Edit in XMetal. the Map Editor pod appeared.
As a beginner, I would suggest including a Help note on the difference between these two operations/settings. It seems like the whole session now has more functionality. Now, if I follow the Help “Dita maps” instructions, the Map Editor and Properties tools appear as in the instructions.

    Hi Miguel,

The problem you had sounds like it relates more to Windows than to XMetaL itself. The commands “Open” and “Edit in XMetaL” will appear on the menu when you right-click on a file in the Windows Explorer. The “Open” command is standard in Windows, and if you select it, Windows will open the file (whatever it is) using the application that it thinks is appropriate. In the case of DITA maps (file extension .ditamap), this should be XMetaL. But in the case of XML files, XMetaL does not “take ownership” of those files automatically in Windows. If you want XML files to open with XMetaL, you need to change that setting via Windows.

    Hello Tom,

Thank you for the clarification, now that I know more about this I actually find it useful to have the “Open” command open XML files somewhere other than in XMetal.

    Cheers,
    Miguel
