difference between addendum and attached file?

It's not clear to me from the online help about the difference between an addendum and an attached file. Why would I use one vs. the other?XMetal Author Enterprise 6.0.2.070

March 22, 2012 at 11:16 pmAn attached file can be anything. When you add an attachment you are asked to browse to select the fie.
An addendum is specifically for the purpose of creating (editing, really) an XML fragment that can later be “one-click-inserted” into the topic by the writer in XMetaL Author. When you insert an addendum, you will see a simple “editor” dialog with a toolbar, in which you can type content, make lists, headings, insert images, and so on.
