If you want to be able to undo any replacements made on files found using the Find in Files feature then each file must be opened. The number of files that can have such replacements made is limited to 20, essentially to limit any performance issues (each file is opened, including all associated files, DTD or XSD, CSS, CTM, macros, etc — the full customization for authoring that file), and on that particular file undo is unlimited.

But, yes, if you want to make modifications to more than 20 files just make sure that checkbox is unchecked. A different process is used to make the changes in this case and the number of files that can be modified is not limited.

And yes, the Find in Files feature only works on files stored on your local file system. So, if you are working with a CMS then you need to check out any files you wish to search within.

For anyone else wondering what we're discussing:
The Find in Files feature allows you to replace content found in files. The option being discussed here (the checkbox labeled “Open files”) is accessed by pressing the “Set replacement options” button shown at the top of the the Results panel on either the “Find 1” or “Find 2” tab (you can perform two different searches and display the results for each one on a different tab).

Note that being able to undo the replacement (or at least confirm that what has been changed was correct) isn't the only reason you might want to open files but it is the most obvious one.
