I assume you are talking about referencing a PDF from an element's attribute, perhaps with something like the following markup:

XMetaL does natively support most of the common bitmap formats including JPG, BMP, GIF, TIF, PNG, etc (see documentation for longer list) but it does not natively support rendering of PDF.

However, it is possible to create a customization that embeds an ActiveX control in place of a particular element, so, provided you can find an ActiveX control that is capable of rendering PDF files (there are a few) you can create a customization that will render your PDF inline during editing. The alternative is to install a PDF reader plug-in for Internet Explorer and then embed the ActiveX control version of IE (WebBrowser control) instead.
