Object checkout in Documentum Webtop

We are using XMetaL Enterprise Edition 5.5 with Documentum Webtop 6.5 SP1.

We changed webtop to specify a default of "root only" for DITA virtual document checkouts. However in XMetaL's webtop interface, when selecting "Check out from repository", the default is still "Root + descendents" for virtual document checkouts.

Is there a way to change this? We really want this to happen in both native Webtop and in XMetaL EE, as folks are mistakenly checking out "Root + descendents" for very large DITA virtual docs and creating a mess sometimes.
