One of our writers was using simpletable for a 2-column table with short values in each column, hoping that the table would only take the space it needed, rather than having very wide columns with little content.

In the HTML output, the table is only as wide as needed for the content.

In the TopLeaf PDF output, the simpletable still uses the entire width of the current text column.

Is there any way to control the width of the table as a whole? Or will PDF tables always take the full column.

In order to produce the best result for any page width, the conversion always uses relative column widths. As a consequence the table will always use the maximum width available.

Since the underlying table model is CALS, the only way to do what you want is to specify absolute column widths. DITA does not appear to have a means of allowing this, but if you can suggest a way we can look at including it in the pre-processing.
