Just got this message in xmetal when I was using the Resource Manager.

Has anyone found a fix to this error? A team member just ran into the same issue with XMetaL Author Enterprise 6.0 Service Pack 1.

They wrote "I was in X-Metal and tried to run Author Assist. Kept getting the “Switch to/Retry” error and had to shut it down from Task Manager. When I tried to open it again I got the following runtime error and it wouldn’t open. I rebooted my laptop completely but the same error occurs and XMetal won’t open. Any ideas?"

If this won't help our team, I hope someone will respond to help others with this in the future. Thanks.

This error (the screenshot) is too generic to provide a specific answer, but runtime errors that are reproducible are almost always triggered by 3rd party modifications to XMetaL Author.

I'm not sure what "Author Assist" is though. It sounds like it might be 3rd party software (a plug-in/add-in/customization) in which case you should check with the maker to see if they have tested it with your version of XMetaL Author and whether they can reproduce the issue with your exact steps, files, etc.

If it is part of XMetaL Author (some feature I'm not aware of, or perhaps something we use another name for) then it would be best to submit a support case to XMetaL Support with as many details as possible. If the issue is reproducible then provide exact steps to reproduce the issue and any files required.

Just a wild guess: reset the workspace. If I remember correctly we had similar problem back in the days and it was fixed by resetting workspace. I could be wrong also, but does not hurt to try. It happens when you press CTRL and start Xmetal. then Xmetal ask, that should it reset the workspace.

Thank you for the reply Derek. It sounds like what you say in regards to Author Assist makes sense. The team member is going to try some steps to see if it can be fixed.

Barbwire - many thanks. That was our first suggestion as well! Sadly, it didn't work.

I appreciate the responses very much. If we come up with a generic solution that would be helpful to others, I will post. If you don't hear anything more, it was related to the 3rd party software.

Hello Derek and ts1521,

If you find the solution. Please do post it here for us. I am having the exact same error but in XMetaL 9.0. I recently upgraded our users from 6.0 to 9.0 and have been getting this error for many users. ts1521 have you found out if it is just a specific user that is having the problem on the computer or if it is any user that logs onto the computer? For us it was specifically the main user of the system. Also, recreating the users profile would resolve the issue for us. But that was time consuming to do many users and of course people are not happy having their profiles recreated because of what it does to outlook, printers and other things they have setup in their windows profile. So far I have not been able to pinpoint the root cause. I appreciate any information you may have.

Hello Ahmed. I will ask the person who encountered the issue if there has been a resolution.

As far as I know it is just a single user having the issue. We are in different locations.

I will post if I find any answers.

Also, I forgot to mention that the problem for us is not when we open resource manager but on application launch. You're problem might be something completely different then what we have but I'm curious. Thanks again.

In the user's case that I mentioned, it sounds like it was related to the 3rd party application. The user uninstalled that application and did not encounter the problem again. The user will have to reinstall the application in the near future though.

Is that a SDL product? Is this the product that they are using below?

It is an SDL product and I've heard it referred to as GAMS. I am still learning, so I'm not very familiar with it, so that is about as much information as I have, but I hope it helps!
