OASIS is expected to release the DITA 1.2 specification in the coming months. We have a free basic DITA 1.2 Configuration Kit available now that allows you to edit DITA 1.2 topics in XMetaL, based on the most recent version of the draft DITA 1.2 DTDs.

The current version of the kit requires XMetaL Author Enterprise 6.0 and is only available to organizations that have an NDA with JustSystems or are willing to sign one. If you are interested in trying it out, please contact me at syeo at justsystems dot com. We would appreciate your feedback.

Hi,

I'm sorry, that was a typo in my original post. It said "justsytems" when it should be "justystems".
Please try me at syeo at justsystems dot com.

The release notes state that XMetaL must be installed in C:\Program Files\XMetaL 6.0\Author. I'm on a 64-bit Windows machine that automatically installed 32-bit programs to C:\Program Files(x86)...  does this mean that I can't install this version of the configuration kit, or is there a workaround?

Hi Joanne,

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use this version of the configuration kit, as absolute paths are used in at least one configuration file. You could try doing a cross-file search-and-replace to change C:\Program Files\XMetaL 6.0\Author path strings to the ones you need, however we haven't tested that at all and I don't know if it will work. Good luck.

Cheers,

Please also note that we have not officially tested XMetaL Author Enterprise on 64-bit hardware with any 64-bit versions of Windows and are not officially supporting such installations. If the product is working for you then that is good to hear as that means Microsoft's WOW64 emulator is doing a good job.

We do plan to officially support 64-bit hardware on some present or future 64-bit version of Windows.

Su-Laine,
Have there been any more releases of the Dita 1.2 Configuration Kit?
   thanks, as always.

We just released a version 0.5 of the configuration kit, however in terms of 5.5 compatibility, it's the same as before: We only support it with XMetaL 6.0, but you can try to hack it as described above to make it work with XMetaL 5.5. Future versions of the configuration kit will probably also be the same way, as we have to focus our QA resources on making sure this works as an upgrade to 6.0.

Is the DITA 1.2 Configuration Kit now generally available to XMetaL 6.0 users? If so, how can I obtain it? Thanks.

I can understand that you can't support this DITA 1.2 Configuration Kit very much, but I have a few doubts:

- Can I install this if I have XMetal 6.0 Enterprise SP1 (Version#: 6.0.2.070)?
- Maybe because of this, at step 4. of the installation instructions I get:
"Error 1606. Could not access network location "C:\Program Files (x86)\XMetal 6.0\Author."

Though we have clients running XMetaL Author Enterprise 6.0 and 6.0 SP1 on Windows 7 64-bit they are not supported on this version of Windows (see the release notes for system requirements -- there is a note about 64-bit). The DITA 1.2 Configuration Kit was designed to install on top of XMetaL Author Enterprise 6.0 and 6.0 SP1 and assumes those requirements.

Your best bet may be to install and run all of these using Microsoft's "XP Mode" until our 7.0 release comes out.
